Structured Cabling and Network Racks: The Hidden Part

Updated · NextGen AV Systems

Structured cabling is an organized system of network and AV cable run from each room to one central point, usually an equipment rack. It makes a smart home or office faster and more reliable, because access points, TVs, cameras and equipment get a wired connection, and easier to service, because every run is labeled and in one place.

What gets wired

  • Wi-Fi access points, so the wireless network has a solid backbone.
  • TVs, projectors, streaming boxes and AV equipment.
  • Security cameras, often powered over the same network cable with Power over Ethernet (PoE).
  • Workstations, printers and anything else that stays in one place.

Cable categories

Category 6 cable supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet over shorter runs, and Category 6A supports it over the full 100 meter channel. Choosing the cable for the speeds you will want later is cheaper than opening walls again.

Why a rack

A rack keeps network, AV and control equipment together, ventilated, labeled and easy to reach, instead of scattered across closets and cabinets. When something needs attention, there is one place to look.

How NextGen AV Systems approaches it

Clean structured cabling and rack installation are part of our enterprise networking, and the installation step of every project is precision cabling, mounting, and hardware setup.
