What Is a Lighting Scene? Smart Lighting Control Explained

Updated · NextGen AV Systems

A lighting scene is a saved combination of light levels across many fixtures, recalled with one press of a keypad, a touch screen or a voice command. Instead of adjusting six switches to get a room right for dinner, one Dinner button sets every light exactly the way you like it.

Scenes replace switch clutter

A lighting control system wires lights to dimmers or modules the system can talk to. Keypads then replace rows of switches, and each button can run a scene for one room or the whole property.

Everyday scenes

  • Morning: soft, rising light in the kitchen and hallways.
  • Entertain: brighter living areas, accent lights on art and landscaping.
  • Movie: everything low, path lights on.
  • All off: one button by the door turns off every light in the house.

Security and energy

Scenes can light entries and paths when you need them, and schedules can turn lights on and off at set times. Dimming uses less power than full brightness, and schedules stop lights burning in empty rooms.

A note on LED dimming

LED fixtures need dimmers or drivers made to work with them. Mismatched parts can flicker or buzz, which is one reason lighting control is designed as a system rather than swapped in switch by switch.
