Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) runs on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and handles many connected devices at once better than older Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi 6E is the same standard extended into the 6 GHz band, which in the U.S. opened 1,200 MHz of new spectrum with far less interference. Devices must support 6E to use the 6 GHz band; everything else keeps working on 2.4 and 5 GHz.
Why 6 GHz helps
The 2.4 and 5 GHz bands are crowded, especially where neighbors' networks overlap. The 6 GHz band has wide, clean channels for 6E devices, which leaves more room on the older bands for everything else.
The trade-off: range
Higher frequencies do not travel through walls as far. Whole-property coverage on 6 GHz comes from placing more access points where people use the network, not from one powerful router.
Coverage is a design job
Access points wired back to a central rack, placed from a plan of the property, give steadier coverage than a single router in a closet. Wiring the access points also leaves the wireless airtime for the devices that need it.
